Filling an Entire Canvas

A Formal Portrait of E by Priscilla Flores, Procreate

When I look at art, I like to think about how the process was done. Does the person start with the background, with the main subject, or are they all over the place? I usually like to do eyes last, that’s how I model everything most of the time. I want to do the entire background first, then focus on the eyes.

Only when I do digital art, it always ends up being something completely different. I don’t follow my rules like I do with physical art. Making things on the iPad are fun still, especially because there’s no cleanup or disaster of a paint spill. In a way, there’s a lot of harmony in working digital because I know all I need to do is move my pen on the screen, and the coding does the rest.

I still want to fill the canvas though. I choose the size and I begin to fill the page up. With this piece, I wanted E (guy in the center) to be the main subject and have him posing as if his school picture was taken. You know the ones where you needed to sit and hold a mock tree? I loved picture days.

This was the result. I tried adding textures, the stary sky, and nice wood. Procreate is an amazing program to work with.

Myth All Around Us

The Good Alligator By Priscilla Flores
Created in Procreate

Blogpost 2/11/2021

Sometimes I think people assume all myth and magic is completely absent from the United States. I don’t blame them either because when enormous buildings are surrounded by other massive metal structures, you assume if something can be made, it’s engineered by geniuses and put on display. So, when I make art, I feel that myth is looked into a lot—classical myth—like Leda and the Swan, or Perseus and Medusa, because there’s nothing around us now days that are fantastical. Right?

We have buildings that touch the sky.

I was originally going to draw a young girl with a dragon because I wanted to make something out of this world. But then I really thought about it and began looking at textures of alligators to reference reptile skin. I couldn’t believe how big these animals are. Like, they’re freaking huge, so huge I can’t believe they’re still walking around. It’s almost like they’re meant to be in some long-ago prehistoric Triassic period. It’s so odd, they seem so out of place, but it could also be because I live in California city-valley where the weather is the same and all the animals are cute.

It’s just, what I want to say is that I thought all the mystery was gone around me, but as I saw the alligator, I realized there’s still magnificent things around me. Because of this, I ended up making a girl with the alligator, because maybe one day alligators will be long gone and merge in the chapter of myth.

Procreate is a pretty amazing program and I’m glad I can use it to draw digital art.

I heard of this place called Earth

I heard of this place called Earth

Title: I heard of this place called Earth

Medium: Digital in Procreate

I created this peace on a whim. Does it show? I saw this cool edit where a bunch of UFO and Heaven’s Gate controversy was mashed up over a cool song. It just made me want to draw something out of this world. Literally.

The goal is to see if my alien pictures will eventually end up on some video or meme. That would be really cool. For the piece, the dimensions are the default 1:1 square image and I used basic brushes. I ended up focusing on the eyes more than anything and I’m kind of happy because I like that part the most out of the entire piece.

On a deeper note, I always wonder about aliens. People automatically believe they’re real and assume they’re either here or eventually going to come. I’m leaning more on the aliens are demons theory and that is the most controversial idea I’ve seen in recent years.
